Guardians of the Galaxy game: Multiplayer removed?

The Guardians of the Galaxy, possibly one of E3’s most unexpected but most welcomed announcements, reportedly had a multiplayer mode. While the new game only allows the player to use Starlord, it seems that there was at least a plan in the past to have the rest of the Guardians be playable too.

This report comes from a LinkedIn page of a former Eidos-Montréal developer, whose profile lists ‘Online Gameplay Director – Multiplayer (cancelled)’ as one of his roles. Given the Avengers game multiplayer credentials, it would seem like a natural progression and a perfect fit to have the Guardians all be playable too.

While the gameplay does look like a lot of fun, not making Drax, Rocket, Groot and Gamora playable seems like a missed opportunity, both for replay value in the game, as well as the addition of an online multiplayer mode. Whilst Avengers certainly had its faults, I generally enjoyed the game and played it much more precisely because I could switch out to a new hero to mix things up a bit and try something new.

Whether this might change down the line and multiplayer is added in (though hopefully not as a cash grab DLC), only time will tell. Guardians releases on October 26th 2021.
