Rumour: New Donkey Kong being developed by Super Mario Odyssey studio
Donkey Kong, one of Nintendo's oldest and most loved Nintendo’s characters is possibly coming back to Nintendo Switch (after the 2018 porting of Tropical Freeze). There are rumours about a new game for the series, developed by Nintendo EPD, the same team that developed Super Mario Odyssey. This rumour was mentioned by the YouTuber LonelyGoomba and other sources mentioning the new game will be 2D and not 3D.
This info was backed up by some comments made by leaker Zippo, here’s the full comment: “It’s the big ape’s 40th anniversary, and while I’m not sure how Nintendo is celebrating the occasion, there is a new 2D DK game being developed by EPD Tokyo. Retro is obviously busy with other things, so Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to bring DK back in as internal series. Don’t expect the “Country” moniker to return, as EPD Tokyo are not interested in making a sequel to games they didn’t make. Diddy, Cranky and the Kremling Krew should all be returning in this instalment. It sounds like this game is launching before the end of the year. An E3 announcement seems very likely”.
Other comments about this new game come from the highly-respected Donkey Kong fansite “DK Vine” which confirms that the development of the game probably started in 2017 or 2018 and that a new team inside Nintendo EPD was specifically created. Talking about the game itself, it seems unclear whether it will be 2D or 3D but it will certainly be a platform game.
What do you make of this rumour? Do you think it’s likely to be true? Would you like to see EPD tackle a new Donkey Kong, or would you rather Retro Studios do it? Let us know with a comments below.
