The Last of Us 3 has a plot but is not in production yet

It’s on the Script Apart podcast that Neil Druckmann, Creative director of The Last of Us, and Halley Gross, co-writer, revealed some information about a potential The Last of Us 3.

Indeed, while talking about The Last of Us 2, Druckmann quickly addressed the subject of a potential sequel.

"I don’t know how much I want to reveal... [Halley Gross] and I did write an outline for a story, that we're not making – but I hope one day can see the light of day – that explores a little bit what happens after this game. We’ll see.", said the director.

Druckmann also added "After we finish one of our big titles, we take a long time to explore different ideas, whether it’s going to be Last of Us 3 whether it's something new, whether there's some old franchise we want to go back to.”

Even though there are apparently some discussions internally about a possible sequel, let’s keep in mind that games like The Last of Us take a lot of work to be developed. "These games take so much to make. [Part 2], I've been thinking about it for seven years, between when the last game came out and when this came out”, said Druckmann.

In terms of development and resources, Part 3 seems to be in competition with other Naughty Dog’s rumored projects such as a multiplayer component of The Last of Us 2, a remake of the 2013’s The Last of Us and a new Uncharted project.
